Manifesting Queerness: LGBTQ+ Perspectives in the Whitney’s Collection

Whitney Members are invited to explore LGBTQ+ perspectives and themes of gender and sexuality in the Whitney’s collection at this virtual talk with Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow Patryk Tomaszewski. From Florine Stettheimer’s fabulous New York gay salons of the 1910s to Diedrick Brackens’s contemporary investigations of Black queer identity through abstract textiles, this program will investigate a range of visually and thematically diverse artworks, including selections from Inheritance, a new exhibition featuring recently acquired and rarely seen permanent collection works by leading contemporary artists. Considering queerness as an artistic counterpoint to the traditionally dominant heteronormative structures in American visual culture, explore how LGBTQ+ artists continue to influence and reshape the landscape of modern and contemporary American art through their diverse works and practices.

Patryk Tomaszewski is a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum and a Ph.D. candidate in art history at the CUNY Graduate Center, researching global twentieth-century realisms. His dissertation offers the first scholarly examination of exhibitions of Socialist Realist art in Stalinist Poland (1948–56). His writing has appeared in ARTMargins Online and MoMA’s post: Notes on Art in a Global Context, among other publications, and he is an adjunct lecturer at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.
