Art History from Home: Wait, This Doesn't Look Asian

In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States, join art historian and curator Xin Wang to look at art made by Asian American and diasporic artists from the Whitney’s collection. Explore how artists such as An-My Le, Ching Ho Cheng, Josh Kline, Morehshin Allahyari, and Mel Chin make work from their diverse experiences and encounters with American culture to defy the assumptions and narrow projections on who they are and how they work.

This series of online talks by the Whitney’s Joan Tisch Teaching Fellows highlights works in the Museum’'s collection to illuminate critical topics in American art from 1900 to the present. During each thirty-minute session, participants are invited to comment and ask questions through a moderated chat.

Xin Wang is a Ph.D. candidate in modern and contemporary art at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, focusing on Soviet hauntology in postmodernism. She has curated and lectured widely in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Her latest writings have appeared in Art in America, E-Flux Journal, and Mousse. She is currently planning a biennial that explores extra-human perspectives on survival and entropy in the anthropocene for summer 2023 in Beijing.
