Around Day's End: A Conversation

Dec 2, 2020

In conjunction with the exhibition Around Day’s End: Downtown New York 1970–1986, this conversation brings together writers, scholars, and curators to discuss four of the key artists working in New York City during this period: Alvin Baltrop, David Hammons, Joan Jonas, and Gordon Matta-Clark. Each speaker reflects on individual works by these artists as well as the larger field of artistic practice in and around the city, particularly along the waterfront. The conversation is moderated by Laura Phipps, assistant curator.

Elena Filipovic is director and curator of Kunsthalle Basel. She is the author of David Hammons: Bliz-aard Ball Sale (Afterall, 2017).

Frances Richard is an art critic and poet. She is the author of Gordon Matta-Clark: Physical Poetics (University of California Press, 2019).

Judith Rodenbeck is an art historian. She is associate professor and chair, media & cultural studies at the University of California, Riverside.

Randal Wilcox is a New York-based artist, independent curator, and writer. Wilcox worked with Alvin Baltrop and is a trustee of the Alvin Baltrop Trust.
