How can painting, and art more broadly, be a method for resisting imperialism and colonization? In this conversation, artists Armig Santos, Danielle De Jesus, Gamaliel Rodríguez, Rogelio Báez Vega, Candida Alvarez and Miguel Luciano discuss their individual practices and collectively explore painting’s possibilities as a medium of opposition to and critique of Puerto Rico’s colonial condition. The conversation is moderated by Taína Caragol, Curator of Painting and Sculpture and Latinx Art and History at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
This conversation is the third in a three-part series featuring artists included in no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria.
Presented in partnership with El Centro: The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.
This event is presented in both English and Spanish, and simultaneous interpretation is available in both languages by Babilla Collective.
Interpretation in American Sign Language and Puerto Rican Sign Language will be provided by Ceiba Interpreters.
