Open Studio: Exquisite Poop

Sat, May 14, 2022
11 am–3 pm

Floor 3, Theater

The 2022 Biennial includes an installation representing the work of A Gathering of the Tribes. A Gathering of the Tribes is a magazine and previously a gallery space founded in 1991 by writer and professor Steve Cannon (1935–2019). Cannon believed in crafting a space for artists and writers to gather and create community. A Gathering of the Tribes magazine might include poems, essays, interviews, songs, photographs, drawings, and collages from these many creators.

Today in Open Studio we will be joined by Tribes artist, Janet Bruesselbach. Janet will lead families through a version of her surrealist art game, Exquisite Poop! The original incarnation was inspired by the way visitors would describe art to Steve Cannon, who was blind. Today we will work together to turn artworks in the Whitney’s collection into words and then back into pictures again. It’s a fun way to play with communication and the challenge of translating between verbal and visual art!

The Susan and John Hess Family Theater is equipped with an induction loop and infrared assistive listening system. Accessible seating is available.

Face coverings are required to attend this event. All attendees ages two and older must wear face coverings that cover the nose and mouth.
