Contemporaries Behind the Scenes: Virtual Walkthrough of Around Day’s End

Wed, Oct 21, 2020
6:30–7:30 pm

Online, via Zoom

Explore the collection display Around Day’s End: Downtown New York, 1970–1986 during this online event with exhibition curators Laura Phipps, curatorial liaison for the Contemporaries, and senior curatorial assistant Christie Mitchell. Featuring paintings, video, photographs, drawings, and archival materials, the show examines twenty artists who approached the city as both provocation and inspiration during a time of uncertainty and crisis for New York fifty years ago.

Central to this show is Gordon Matta-Clark’s Day’s End, an innovative project from 1975 and the inspiration for a new major public sculpture by David Hammons, scheduled to be unveiled later this year. Join Phipps and Mitchell as they unpack works by Hammons and Matta-Clark as well as Alvin Baltrop, Joan Jonas, Martin Wong, and others.
