Step into Edward Hopper’s New York with the organizers of the exhibition, Kim Conaty, Steven and Ann Ames Curator of Drawings and Prints, and Melinda Lang, Senior Curatorial Assistant.

Discover how Edward Hopper formed his unique vision of an iconic city. While the artist lived in New York over a period of rapid modernization and urban development, as skyscrapers punctuated the skyline and trains and construction sites roared below, his metropolis remained decidedly human-scale. This exhibition is the first of its kind to focus on Hopper’s rich relationship with New York: how the city served as the subject, setting, and inspiration for so many of the artist’s most celebrated and enduring portrayals of urban experience, from early impressions in sketches, prints, and illustrations to beloved late paintings and rarely-seen ephemera and photographs from the Museum’s recently acquired Sanborn Hopper Archive.

For this event, the curatorial team will provide an introductory overview of the exhibition, followed by an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.
